Kansas Mesothelioma Attorneys

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused almost exclusively by exposure to asbestos, a class of minerals. Unfortunately, many Kansas citizens have been exposed to asbestos and subsequently been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Danger Asbestos Warning SignInterestingly, the percentage of Kansans who died from mesothelioma in comparison to asbestosis was two to one. This might mean that Kansans exposed to asbestos are at a higher risk of developing mesothelioma as opposed to asbestosis. No one is quite sure why asbestos exposure leads to a higher incidence of mesothelioma, but asbestosis is known to increase your risk of developing lung cancers, such as mesothelioma.

There are three different types of mesothelioma, developing in different areas of the body. These types are:

  • Pleural mesothelioma – this type of mesothelioma develops in the pleura, the mesothelium surrounding the chest cavity. It is the most common form of mesothelioma, seen in 75% of mesothelioma cases.
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma – this type of mesothelioma develops in the peritoneum, the mesothelium surrounding the abdominal cavity. It is the second most common form of mesothelioma, seen in 20% of the mesothelioma cases.
  • Pericardial mesothelioma – this type of mesothelioma develops in the pericardium, the mesothelium surrounding the heart. It is the most rare form of mesothelioma, seen in only 5% of the mesothelioma cases.

Asbestos exposure can occur in many different occupations. If you have worked in a high-risk occupation, you should speak with your medical professional to ensure that you are watching for the symptoms of mesothelioma. Early diagnosis is the key to improving your prognosis.
